Your exciting journey begins in Puerto Maldonado, the biodiversity capital of Peru. From there, embark on a scenic 50-minute boat ride along the winding Madre de Dios River to reach the Amazon Field Station by Inkaterra, located within Peru’s very first ecological reserve.

Arrival

Start your exciting Amazon adventure in Puerto Maldonado, known as Peru’s capital of biodiversity. Enjoy a 50-minute boat ride along the winding Madre de Dios River to reach Amazon Field Station by Inkaterra, located within the country’s first ecological reserve.

Once there, settle into your cabin or jungle pavilion and let the sounds of nature immerse you—an invitation to discover the hidden wonders of the rainforest.

Jungle Trails

Explore nature trails that wind between the giant roots of towering trees. This introduction to the Amazon ecosystem showcases its rich biodiversity—over 540 bird species, 362 types of ants (a world record!), and more than 100 mammals have been recorded here.

Night River Excursion

Sail along the Madre de Dios River after sunset in search of wildlife that comes out in the dark. Look for owls, night birds, capybaras, and caimans as your guide explains their fascinating nocturnal behavior.

Inkaterra Canopy Walkway

Rise above the forest floor on a system of seven hanging bridges and eight observation platforms, 42 meters (138 feet) above ground. Originally built for scientific study, this canopy walkway offers breathtaking views of the rainforest from above.

River Island Exploration

Take a short boat ride to a secluded river island near the field station. This transitional forest is home to an abundance of birdlife, including the iconic Amazonian umbrellabird (Cephalopterus ornatus).

Lake Sandoval (Alternative to River Island – Extra Cost)

Walk along a forest boardwalk into the Tambopata National Reserve to reach Lake Sandoval—a stunning, mirror-like lake surrounded by palms. Glide across its calm waters by canoe, watching for caimans, turtles, howler monkeys, anacondas, and the elusive giant river otter.

Aguajales (Swamp Walk)

Walk along a 200-meter (656-foot) boardwalk through the mysterious swamp forests known as aguajales. Discover how plants and animals have adapted to life in this flooded habitat, home to amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.

Organic Bio-Garden

Visit our organic bio-garden to explore a wide variety of tropical plants and learn about their traditional medicinal uses. Managed by Inkaterra Asociación (ITA), this garden helps preserve ancient knowledge and supports sustainable farming techniques.

Palmetum

Stroll through our 30-hectare Palmetum, home to 19 species of native Amazonian palms. This reforestation zone reveals the ingenious survival tactics of palms and their cultural significance—including the “walking palm,” which moves its roots in search of sunlight.

Dye Plants Exploration

Discover the Amazon’s natural color palette by learning about local plants traditionally used to produce natural dyes. Observe how roots, leaves, and flowers are harvested and processed by native communities.

Chacra Gamitana & Creek Visit

Take a 20-minute boat ride to our model farm and the Gamitana Creek. Learn about tropical fruits, their flavors, and their role in the local economy. Managed by Inkaterra Asociación, this project supports sustainable development in nearby communities. Enjoy an optional canoe ride along the creek, home to birds, piranhas, and caimans.

Night Walk in the Jungle

Experience the jungle after dark, when it comes alive with a completely different rhythm. Walk silently under the moonlight to listen for frogs, insects, night birds, and mammals that awaken when the sun goes down.

Departure

Return to Puerto Maldonado by motorized boat for your departing flight.

Note: Check-out is at 10:00 a.m. You may relax at the lodge’s lounge or restaurant while waiting for your transfer. Lunch on the departure day is not included but can be arranged in advance (additional cost).

Packing List

  • Sunscreen and Lip Balm: The sun at altitude can be powerful; guard your skin and lips.
  • Toilet Paper: Handy for local bathrooms (yes, most charge one sol for use)
  • Insect Repellent: Beginning on your second day, you’ll be in the jungle, an area where mosquitoes are prevalent. It is advisable also to wear long-sleeved clothing.
  • Outerwear: A warm jacket for the cool mornings, and a lighter one for the  Layering is important when it comes to adjusting to fluctuating temperatures.
  • Energy Snacks: Beef or fish jerky, energy bars (you can try something like Kind bars), chocolate, granola, and candy to keep you energized the 6-8 hours worth of trekking you will do each day.
  • Water Container:You need a bottle or hydration system with at least a 2-liter capacity. The first lunch will also see it being refilled with purified water.
  • Flashlight or Headlamp: Helpful for getting around the campsite and starting hikes early in the morning.
  • Hats and Sunglasses: A hat for sun and a warm hat for evening On chilly mornings, it’s gloves that are also a good 
  • Cash onHand: Carry 600 soles (200 USD) in small, easily exchanged bills for bathrooms, snacks, souvenirs, and tips.
  • Personal medicines: Band-aids, pain relievers, altitude illness medication, anti-nausea tablets, ovules.
  • Cameraor Phone — Take pictures of the stunning scenery and memorable moments.

Yes. The tour is designed for travelers of most ages and fitness levels. However, some jungle walks may involve uneven terrain and moderate physical effort. Children and seniors are welcome with appropriate supervision.

Is there electricity and Wi-Fi at the lodge?

Yes. The lodge provides electricity during specific hours. However, Wi-Fi is limited or unavailable to maintain an immersive jungle experience.

Are there mosquitoes or insects?

Yes. Being in the Amazon, insects are part of the environment. Repellent and long sleeves are highly recommended, especially during hikes and in the early morning or evening.

Can special dietary needs be accommodated?

Yes. The lodge’s restaurant can accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and other dietary restrictions with prior notice.

Is the tour available year-round?

Yes. The tour operates year-round. The dry season (May to October) offers clearer skies and easier hiking, while the wet season (November to March) brings lush vegetation and active wildlife, though some trails may be muddy.

How physically demanding is the tour?

Moderate. Activities include walking through rainforest trails, climbing canopy towers, and canoeing. While not extreme, a basic level of fitness is recommended.

Will I see animals like monkeys, caimans, or otters?

Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, but the Tambopata Reserve is one of the most biodiverse regions in the world. With the help of expert guides, chances of seeing monkeys, birds, caimans, and even giant river otters are high.

Is travel insurance required?

It is not mandatory, but highly recommended. The rainforest is a remote environment, and having travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, delays, and cancellations is advisable.
