Information about Waqrapukara Trek

Waqrapukara is a lesser-known Inca archaeological site perched on a dramatic mountain ridge in the Apurímac Canyon. Its name means “Horned Fortress” in Quechua, due to its unique twin-horn rock formation. It is both a sacred site and a breathtaking viewpoint.

Most treks start from Cusco with a drive to either Huayqui or Pitumarca, depending on the chosen route. From there, the hike begins through remote Andean landscapes and small rural communities.

The Waqrapukara Trek is considered moderate. Although the distance is not very long, the altitude (over 4,000 meters or 13,000 feet) and some steep sections can make it challenging. Good physical condition and some acclimatization in Cusco are recommended.

There are different options:

  • Full-day trek: Around 6 to 8 hours total (3–4 hours one way and the same return).

  • Overnight trek: A 2-day adventure with camping near the site, perfect for a slower pace and stargazing.

While it is possible to visit without a guide, going with a tour is highly recommended. A local guide ensures safety, navigation, cultural insights, and support in case of altitude-related issues.

Yes, some routes require a small entrance fee (around 10 to 15 soles), usually paid to the local community. Check with your tour operator if it is included.

Yes, the trek is possible year-round. However, the best time to go is during the dry season (May to October), when trails are drier and skies are clearer. From November to March, be prepared for rain, slippery trails, and limited views.

No. One of the highlights of this trek is the solitude. Unlike popular sites like Rainbow Mountain or Machu Picchu, Waqrapukara remains quiet and uncrowded—ideal for travelers seeking off-the-beaten-path experiences.

It depends on fitness level. The hike includes steep sections and high elevation, so it is better suited for active travelers in good health. Children and older adults can enjoy it with proper preparation and pacing.

Of course, Waqrapukara is one of the most underrated but rewarding hiking trails in the Cusco region. If you’re looking for an experience that combines epic landscapes, ancient Inca architecture, and true solitude, this hidden gem is well worth the effort.

Unlike crowded tourist sites such as Rainbow Mountain or Machu Picchu, Waqrapukara offers peace, mystery, and authenticity. The hike is challenging enough to make you feel accomplished, and the panoramic views of the Apurímac Canyon are breathtaking. Add to that the spiritual energy of this horned fortress and its remote location, and you’ll understand why many travelers consider it a life-changing experience.

So yes, Waqrapukara is definitely worth it, especially if you crave adventure, culture, and silence in the heart of the Andes.
