The massive horns reach heights of up to 4,140 meters.
Itinerary
01
Cusco | Quiquijana - Pomacanchi - Santa Lucia - Waqrapukara - Cusco.
This eye-catching one-day excursion begins at sunrise. We will pick you up from your hotel at 4:00 a.m. and transport you two hours to the village of “Quiquijana”. From there, after a nutritious breakfast to increase your energy, we’ll continue alongside the sparkling “Pomacanchi” lagoon, one of the largest in the area. This gorgeous lake is surrounded by grasslands and agricultural farms.
Following that, we’ll pursue our path for an hour and a half over an unpaved road till the village of “Santa Lucía”, seeing amazing landscape and even looking at the lagoon in the distance. We’ll drive for another 30 minutes to the beginning place of our walk after leaving town. You’ll have time to get your belongings gathered before we begin. The first stretch lasts around 1.5 hours and includes views of the spectacular “Apurimac” Canyon, one of Peru’s deepest, as well as stunning scenery with cliffs along the route.
When we get at the Waqrapukara viewpoint, you’ll be able to take your first shots of the spectacular fortification emerging from the canyon’s brink. Next, we’ll descend a difficult walk to the spot on a cliff’s edge, where you may enjoy the Apurimac River flowing downstream.
You’ll have approximately an hour and a half to visit the archeological site, climbing through the temple’s remnants and photographing the iconic horned-shaped rock formation and the spectacular canyon backdrop. The site itself contains mysterious monuments from the pre-Inca and Inca times, terraces, and an interesting underlying history.
Finally, when everyone is ready, we’ll start the hike back the way we came. We’ll arrive by private vehicle after about an hour and a half of trekking, and we’ll return to Cusco about 5:00.
