Tambopata 5 days Itinerary (Hacienda Concepcion)

Day
01

Arrival & Rainforest Immersion

Arrive in Puerto Maldonado, known as the Capital of Biodiversity, and begin your journey into the heart of the Amazon. A 25-minute boat ride along the clay-colored Madre de Dios River brings you to Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción, a peaceful lodge nestled in a private eco-reserve surrounded by lush jungle.

After settling into your elevated wooden cabaña or room, head to the Casa Grande dining room, a beautiful palm-thatched space, to enjoy an elegant à-la-carte lunch inspired by Amazonian ingredients.

In the afternoon, explore the surrounding rainforest on foot with a guided walk along the Concepción Trails. These scenic paths wind through both primary and secondary forests, offering a fascinating introduction to the complex ecosystems of the Amazon Basin. Located on the grounds of a former cacao and rubber plantation, the lodge is now a sanctuary for tropical plants and exotic wildlife.

As the sun sets, experience the magic of the jungle’s transformation on the Twilight River excursion. Cruise along the river as daytime species retreat and nocturnal animals awaken. Keep your eyes open for black caimans resting along the riverbanks and admire the constellations of the southern hemisphere twinkling above.

Return to the lodge for a refined à-la-carte dinner, and unwind in your cabaña as you listen to the captivating symphony of the Amazon night — from chirping insects to distant calls echoing through the trees.

Day
02

Lake Sandoval, Canopy Walk & Rainforest by Night

Begin the day early, if you wish, with a buffet breakfast served from 05:30, ideal for those ready to catch the jungle at its most active.

Your morning adventure takes you to the stunning Lake Sandoval, a glassy oxbow lake nestled within the protected Tambopata National Reserve. After a scenic hike along a sun-dappled rainforest trail, board a traditional dugout canoe to glide silently across the calm waters, surrounded by elegant palm trees and lush jungle.

This biodiverse lake is home to an array of iconic Amazonian wildlife, including endangered giant river otters, red howler monkeys, red-bellied macaws, anacondas, side-neck turtles, and black caimans, as well as many colorful bird species. After this immersive experience, return to Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción just in time for lunch.

In the afternoon, ascend into the treetops with the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway, a remarkable system of seven hanging suspension bridges and eight observation platforms, all built with minimal environmental impact. Climb the 42-meter (138-foot) tower and enjoy panoramic views of the vast jungle canopy. Watch for brightly colored toucans, woodpeckers, trogons, monkeys, and even the elusive three-toed sloth.

As night falls, choose your evening experience:

  • Embark on the Rainforest by Night excursion, a guided walk through the jungle using flashlights. As your senses heighten, discover insects, frogs, and nocturnal mammals that only emerge after dark.

  • Alternatively, indulge in a relaxing Amazonian therapy at the NUA Spa, set deep in the rainforest, where treatments blend traditional techniques with local ingredients.

End the day with a gourmet à-la-carte dinner, served from 19:00, and enjoy the tranquility of your lodge surrounded by the sounds of the jungle at night.

Day
03

Medicinal Plants, Brazil Nuts & Lagoon Exploration

After breakfast at the lodge, begin the day with a visit to the Botanical Garden, where you will learn about a variety of medicinal plants native to the Amazon and their traditional uses among local communities. This hands-on experience offers a deeper understanding of the indigenous knowledge that connects nature with healing.

Continue your exploration with a stop at the Brazil Nut Cabin, where expert guides will introduce you to the history, cultural significance, and economic impact of Brazil nut harvesting. Discover how this vital rainforest product plays an essential role in sustainable livelihoods for Amazonian families.

After a delicious lunch in the Casa Grande dining room, unwind with a peaceful paddle canoe ride on the lodge’s serene oxbow-shaped lagoon, or cocha. Glide across the clay-colored waters while taking in the jungle scenery and observing birds such as hoatzins, flycatchers, and gray-necked woodrails. With luck, you might hear the booming calls of red howler monkeys in the distance.

Along the way, admire the eerie silhouette of the semi-submerged steamboat Fitzcarrald, a relic of Amazonian lore. The story of this vessel inspired the legendary film Fitzcarraldo, directed by Werner Herzog, which won the Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1982.

Before dinner, take a short walk to one of the lodge’s Inland Collpas — mineral-rich clay walls that attract various animals in need of salt. Although sightings are not guaranteed, your guide will explain how these natural clay licks play a critical role in mammal behavior and diet in the rainforest.

Day
04

Cacao Experience & Brazil Nut Harvesting

Begin your morning with a guided Cacao Experience, an immersive activity that takes place on the grounds of the lodge’s former cacao and rubber plantation. Discover the fascinating journey of cacao from fruit to dessert, and learn how this treasured Amazonian product is cultivated and processed.

Depending on the season, you may even have the chance to harvest fresh cacao pods, opening them to reveal the raw fruit inside. Roll up your sleeves to peel and grind toasted cacao nibs, and finish the workshop with a delicious tasting session of homemade chocolate treats during tea time — a true highlight for food lovers.

After lunch at Casa Grande, continue your Amazon exploration with a hands-on introduction to one of the region’s most economically significant resources: the Brazil nut tree (Bertholletia excelsa). These towering giants can live up to 500 years and are crucial to the livelihood of many local families.

During this educational activity, you will learn about the ecological importance, sustainable harvesting, and processing techniques used by local communities to collect Brazil nuts. See how traditional tools are still used today in this labor-intensive yet environmentally friendly practice, and gain new appreciation for a product deeply tied to the Amazon’s cultural and economic fabric.

Day
05

Farewell to the Amazon

Wake up one last time to the soothing sounds of the rainforest — parakeets chirping in the treetops and monkeys swinging playfully through the canopy. Savor these final moments of connection with the Amazon before your return to the outside world.

Enjoy breakfast at Casa Grande, with check-out scheduled for 10:00. If your departure flight is later in the day, you may opt to enjoy an additional lunch at the lodge (available at extra cost).

At the designated time, board your motorized wooden boat for the 25-minute journey back along the Madre de Dios River to Puerto Maldonado Airport, where your Amazon adventure concludes.
