Tambopata 4 days Itinerary (Hacienda Concepcion)

Day
01

Welcome to the Amazon Rainforest

Arrive in Puerto Maldonado, known as the Capital of Biodiversity, and begin your journey deep into the heart of the Peruvian Amazon. A 25-minute boat ride down the clay-colored Madre de Dios River will take you to Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción, a lodge nestled within a private eco-reserve surrounded by primary and secondary rainforest.

Upon arrival, settle into your elevated wooden cabaña or room, designed for comfort and harmony with nature. Enjoy a delicious à-la-carte lunch at the Casa Grande, a palm-thatched dining area serving dishes inspired by local Amazonian ingredients.

In the afternoon, begin your immersion into the jungle with a guided walk along the Concepción Trails, a network of nature paths that wind through the forest and reveal the fascinating complexity of the Amazon basin ecosystems. Once a cacao and rubber plantation, this area now thrives with tropical plants and exotic wildlife, protected by its proximity to the Tambopata National Reserve.

As twilight sets in, embark on the Twilight River excursion, a peaceful boat ride where the rainforest transitions from day to night. Watch as daytime creatures retreat and nocturnal animals emerge, including the elusive black caiman and a sky full of southern hemisphere stars.

Conclude the day with an à-la-carte dinner back at the lodge, then relax in your room while the soothing night sounds of the jungle — croaking frogs, calling birds, and rustling leaves — lull you into rest.

Day
02

Lake Sandoval, Canopy Walk & Nighttime Rainforest Experience

Begin your day early, with buffet breakfast served from 05:30 for those eager to experience the jungle at dawn.

Set out on a guided journey to Lake Sandoval, a pristine oxbow lake located deep within the Tambopata National Reserve. Follow a scenic rainforest trail dappled with morning light, then board a traditional dug-out wooden canoe to gently paddle across the calm waters, surrounded by elegant palm trees and lush vegetation.

Lake Sandoval is a haven for wildlife. With a bit of luck, you may encounter giant river otters, red howler monkeys, macaws, side-neck turtles, anacondas, and black caimans, along with dozens of tropical bird species. After this unforgettable exploration, return to Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción in time for a well-deserved lunch.

In the afternoon, ascend into the treetops on the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway — a safe and ecologically designed system of seven hanging bridges suspended between eight observation platforms, all set high above the forest floor. Climb a 42-meter (138-foot) tower for a sweeping view of the Amazon rainforest canopy, and watch for toucans, monkeys, trogons, woodpeckers, and even the elusive three-toed sloth.

As evening approaches, choose your next adventure:

  • Join the Rainforest by Night excursion, equipped with flashlights and guided by a naturalist. This immersive experience heightens your senses as you walk through the jungle under the cover of darkness, searching for creatures that only emerge at night.

  • Or, opt for relaxation with a therapeutic treatment at the NUA Spa, nestled in the heart of the rainforest and offering signature rituals designed to restore balance and calm.

End your day with a delicious à-la-carte dinner, served from 19:00, and let the rhythm of the rainforest carry you into the night.

Day
03

Botanical Garden, Brazil Nut Cabin & Oxbow Lagoon Adventure

Begin your day with a hearty breakfast at the lodge before setting out to explore the Botanical Garden, where you will learn about a wide variety of Amazonian medicinal plants and their traditional uses in local communities. Discover how native cultures have long relied on these natural remedies for healing and ritual purposes.

Next, visit the Brazil Nut Cabin, a fascinating stop where you will uncover the history, ecological value, and economic role of the Brazil nut in the region. Learn about the sustainable harvesting process and the nut’s enduring cultural and commercial significance.

After lunch at the Casa Grande dining room, enjoy a peaceful paddle canoe ride across the lodge’s private oxbow-shaped lagoon (known locally as a cocha). Float along its clay-colored waters while listening to the ambient jungle sounds and spotting wildlife such as hoatzins, flycatchers, and gray-necked woodrails. In the distance, you may hear the calls of red howler monkeys echoing through the trees.

As you explore the lagoon, you will come across the semi-submerged steamboat Fitzcarrald, whose intriguing history inspired the critically acclaimed film Fitzcarraldo by Werner Herzog — awarded Best Director at the 1982 Cannes Film Festival. The story of this vessel adds a layer of mystery and cinematic charm to your Amazon experience.

Before dinner, take a short walk to one of the lodge’s nearby Inland Collpas — mineral-rich clay walls that attract various species, particularly mammals in search of essential salts. While sightings are not guaranteed, this is a great opportunity to understand animal behavior in the wild and explore one of the Amazon’s most curious natural phenomena.

Day
04

Farewell to the Amazon

Wake up one final time to the sounds of the rainforest — parakeets calling in the treetops and monkeys rustling through the canopy. Take in these last moments of peace and connection with nature as you prepare for your journey onward.

Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at Casa Grande, surrounded by the natural beauty of the lodge. Check-out is at 10:00, but if your departure flight is scheduled for later, an optional lunch can be arranged (additional cost applies) to extend your stay just a bit longer.

At the designated time, board your motorized wooden boat for the 25-minute return trip along the Madre de Dios River, retracing your path back to Puerto Maldonado Airport, where your Amazon journey concludes.
