Tambopata 5 days Itinerary (Reserva Amazonica)

Day
01

Arrival & Welcome to the Rainforest

Your adventure begins upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado, known as the Biodiversity Capital of Peru. After a short car ride to the port, board a motorized boat for a scenic 45-minute journey along the Madre de Dios River, where the lush greenery signals your entry into the Amazon.

Arrive at Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica, located deep in the heart of the jungle. After a warm welcome and orientation session, you’ll learn about the wide variety of à la carte excursions available—allowing you to customize your experience based on your interests.

Enjoy lunch or head straight to your eco-luxury cabin, nestled in Peru’s first private ecological reserve, protected since 1975. After a short rest—perhaps a nap or time in your hammock—your Inkaterra Explorer Guide will lead you on your first excursion.

We recommend starting with a Trail Walk, ideal for discovering the Amazon’s layered ecosystem and the remarkable biodiversity of the rainforest. Walk beneath giant trees like the Shihuahuaco, listen to birdsong and rustling leaves, and watch for monkeys and sloths hiding in the canopy.

As the sun sets, take part in the Twilight River excursion to experience the rainforest after dark. Spot nocturnal animals like nightjars, owls, capybaras, and caimans along the riverbanks.

Dinner, inspired by Amazonian cuisine, is served from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM in the main dining room—complimentary Pisco cocktail included. End the day relaxing in your cabin, serenaded by the rainforest’s nighttime chorus.

Day
02

Lake Sandoval & Canopy Walkway

Wake up to the sounds of the jungle and start your day early with a buffet breakfast available from 5:00 AM. This morning, visit the stunning Lake Sandoval, located inside the Tambopata National Reserve.

Paddle a wooden canoe through narrow channels into the lake, surrounded by graceful palm trees. Keep your camera ready—this area is rich in wildlife, including giant river otters, howler monkeys, macaws, black caimans, anacondas, and turtles.

Return to the lodge in time for lunch, and in the afternoon, experience the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway—a network of hanging bridges and towers rising 42 meters (138 feet) above the forest floor. From the treetops, spot toucans, woodpeckers, monkeys, and possibly the elusive three-toed sloth.

Stay a bit longer to watch the sunset from a viewing tower while enjoying a cocktail, or book a night in a treehouse with luxury amenities (available at additional cost).

Back at the lodge, unwind with a spa treatment at ENA Spa (optional, extra charge), and enjoy dinner à la carte from 7:00 PM onward.

Day
03

Rainforest Farming & Creek Exploration

Today begins with a 25-minute boat ride to the Gamitana Model Farm and Creek—a fantastic opportunity to explore the Amazon’s incredible variety of exotic fruits and medicinal plants, many still used by remote jungle communities today.

Walk through lush jungle trails to the Gamitana Creek, home to piranhas, turtles, caimans, and hidden bird species. Return to the lodge for a hearty lunch.

In the afternoon, journey 35 minutes upstream to visit Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción, located on the grounds of a historic cacao and rubber plantation. Once run by Catholic missionaries, this area now boasts more than 200 plant species used for medicine and ecological research.

End the day with a peaceful 30-minute canoe ride to spot herons, nightjars, and turtles before returning to your lodge for the evening.

Day
04

Organic Gardens & Night Jungle Walk

After breakfast, take a guided tour of the Organic Bio-Garden, where you’ll learn about tropical plants and their medicinal and nutritional uses, based on local traditions. Next, visit the 30-hectare Palmetum, home to a rich variety of Amazonian palm species, part of Inkaterra’s forest restoration and conservation efforts.

In the afternoon, explore the Anaconda Walk, a 200-meter (656-foot) wooden boardwalk built above a flooded aguaje forest. This lush environment is ideal for spotting amphibians, birds, mammals, and a wide range of plant species.

After dinner, venture into the jungle one last time on the Rainforest by Night excursion. Equipped with a flashlight and led by your expert guide, experience the forest as it comes alive with sounds and movements—spotting creatures that only emerge after dark.

Day
05

Farewell to the Amazon

Enjoy your final morning surrounded by vibrant wildlife. Listen as parrots call from the trees and agoutis dart through the gardens. Over 540 bird species have been registered in and around Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica—so keep your eyes open.

Check-out is at 10:00 AM. Depending on your flight schedule, lunch can be arranged for this day (optional, additional cost). Afterward, embark on a final 45-minute boat ride back to Puerto Maldonado airport.

This 5-day journey is a suggested itinerary. All excursions are offered à la carte upon arrival and may vary based on weather conditions and availability.
