Tambopata 3 days Itinerary (Reserva Amazonica)

Day
01

Welcome to the Amazon

Your adventure begins in Puerto Maldonado, the capital of Peru’s biodiversity. After a short drive to the river port, board a motorized boat and enjoy a 45-minute journey along the winding Madre de Dios River, taking in the lush Amazon scenery. Your destination: Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica, nestled deep in the rainforest.

Upon arrival, you’ll receive a warm welcome and a briefing about the available excursions. You’ll be able to design your personalized itinerary based on your interests. Then, either enjoy a delicious lunch or head to your private cabaña, located in Peru’s first private ecological reserve, protected by Inkaterra since 1975.

After a short rest in your rustic-luxury cabin—whether relaxing in a hammock or taking a siesta—get ready to explore with your Inkaterra Explorer Guide. We recommend starting with a walk along the Rainforest Trail System, where you’ll discover the incredible biodiversity of the Amazon Basin. Walk beneath towering trees like the Shihuahuaco, listen to the calls of exotic birds, and keep your eyes peeled for monkeys or sloths among the branches.

At sunset, embark on the Twilight River excursion, a peaceful boat ride that reveals how the jungle transforms at night. Spot nocturnal species such as nightjars, owls, capybaras, and even caimans hiding near the riverbanks.

Later, enjoy an Amazon-inspired dinner served between 7:00 and 10:00 p.m. at the main dining room—paired with a complimentary Pisco cocktail. As night falls, unwind in your cabin, serenaded by the natural symphony of the rainforest.

Day
02

Lake Sandoval & Canopy Walk

As the sun filters through the trees, the jungle comes alive. Enjoy an early buffet breakfast starting at 5:00 a.m. before setting off to explore the sparkling Lake Sandoval, located within the Tambopata National Reserve.

Board a traditional wooden canoe and paddle through narrow channels before reaching the wide, palm-fringed lake. Keep an eye out for wildlife—giant river otters, howler monkeys, macaws, black caimans, turtles, anacondas, and a wide variety of birds call this place home.

Return to the lodge for lunch, and in the afternoon, head to the thrilling Inkaterra Canopy Walkway—a network of hanging bridges connected by observation towers rising up to 42 meters (138 feet) above the ground. This is your chance to see the rainforest from above and spot wildlife such as toucans, woodpeckers, monkeys, and the elusive three-toed sloth.

Extend your treetop visit with a sunset cocktail at the tower or even spend the night in a treehouse suite (optional, extra cost). Once back on the ground, continue your adventure with the Anaconda Walk, a 200-meter (656-foot) wooden boardwalk over seasonally flooded wetlands. This rich ecosystem is home to frogs, birds, mammals, and unique plant life.

As night falls, grab a flashlight and join the Night Jungle Walk. Guided by your expert, walk through the darkened forest as nocturnal life awakens around you—spot insects, mammals, and other creatures that only emerge after dusk.

After the walk, consider treating yourself to a relaxing session at the ENA Spa (optional service). A la carte dinner is available from 7:00 p.m.

Day
03

Farewell to the Rainforest

Enjoy your last morning surrounded by vibrant nature. Listen to parrots chattering in the trees, and watch agoutis moving through the gardens. Over 540 species of birds have been recorded in and around Inkaterra Reserva Amazónica, making it one of the most biodiverse places on Earth.

Check-out is at 10:00 a.m., but depending on your flight time, a lunch can be arranged (extra cost). Then, board the boat for a 45-minute ride upriver back to Puerto Maldonado Airport.

This 3-day program is a suggested itinerary. Activities and excursions are flexible and can be selected upon arrival at the lodge. Please note that all experiences are subject to weather conditions.
