Choquequirao Trek

Our Choquequirao trek 4 Days offers an invigorating and remarkable journey, providing a gratifying adventure. Come and accompany us on an exploration of Machu Picchu’s sacred counterpart. This expedition allows you to witness firsthand an exceptional Inca settlement nestled atop the Apurimac Canyon, referred to by the local Quechua people as “the Talking God” due to its powerful river. The trek initiates and concludes in the town of Cachora. It is indeed a demanding excursion, not suitable for the faint-hearted. This hike spans a total of 20 miles in one direction or 40 miles round trip.

  1. Key Attractions: Hike to Machu Picchu’s “sister city”, Choquequirao, which means the Cradle of Gold.
  2. Pinnacle Experiences: Enjoy a serious physical challenge – steep uphills and downhills through the amazing Apurimac Canyon.
  3. Scenic Wonders: Enjoy the dramatic landscapes and a variety of flora and fauna.
  4. Memorable Moments: You will see Condor flying over you in the afternoon at Choquequirao.
  5. Noteworthy Features: Choquequirao is far less crowded and offers a more authentic trekking experience than the classic Inca Trail.
  6. Cultural Encounters: Hike through small villages on the way and see how Peruvian people live in remote areas.
  7. Panoramic Vistas: Soak in views of snow-capped mountains and awe-inspiring Incan ruins.

Choquequirao Trek Itinerary

We would like to inform you that the tour will begin promptly at 5:00 AM, with your pick up at the hotel. We will begin our journey with a bus ride of approximately 4-hours to the town of Cachora, Andean Village located at an altitude of 2,900 meters above sea level. On this journey, you will be amazed by the majestic snow peaks of Salkantay and Veronica, which are known to be revered as Inca gods. Furthermore, the panoramic views of the upper and lower valleys will create a picturesque landscape.

After reaching Cachora, we will then drive for another hour to reach Capulliyuc, where our team consisting of horsemen and cook will greet you. Afterward, you will be served a delicious meal to keep you energized for the two-hour trek to Chikiska, located at an elevation of 2,115 meters, where you will witness the beautiful Apurimac valley and snow-capped peaks of Padreyoc and Wayna Cachora towering at 5,482 meters.

As we descend through the eastern Andean slopes towards Coca Masana, at 2,330 meters, you will experience a shift in temperature and a change in the surrounding flora and fauna. Our journey will end at Playa Rosalina, also known as Rosalina Beach, situated at an altitude of 1,550 meters, where we will set up our tents beside the Apurimac River, ready for the next phase of an unforgettable adventure.

An early rise at 5:00 am, accompanied by a serving of coca tea delivered to your tent, kicks off our day. Following that, we efficiently pack up, savor a hearty breakfast, and promptly embark on our hike towards Maranpata or Choquequirao, which we aim to reach by mid-day. Upon arriving at the archaeological site, we delve into its history step by step, marveling at the incredible skills and intelligence of the people who constructed this remarkable relic. It transports us back to the glorious era of the Inca civilization. As we soak in the beauty and let our minds run wild with ideas, we fearlessly observe the majestic condors that grace the Choquequirao area around 3 p.m. when they ascend to higher altitudes. Later, we follow a route to Raqaypata, where we set up camp for the night. After a satisfying dinner, we settle in for the night

The third day holds a special enchantment as we devote it entirely to immersing ourselves in the historical magic and grandeur of Choquequirao. Your guide will dedicate approximately 5 hours to elucidate the key facets of Choquequirao, providing comprehensive insights into its 8 sectors, including granaries, dwellings, temples, and the three tiers of the excavated ruins of this late Inca settlement. This encompasses areas in the midst of excavation and the unexplored regions that hold untold stories about this final haven of the beleaguered Inca empire’s terraces.

Once again, akin to the morning, the afternoon offers us the opportunity to witness the majestic flight of condors, and if fortune smiles upon us, they may grace us with their close presence. In the afternoon, we’ll return to our campsite for a satisfying lunch, followed by relaxation and the serenity that Choquequirao bestows. We will spend the night there, soaking in the atmosphere of this remarkable place.

After indulging in another early breakfast, we’ll gear up for our return journey to Cusco, bidding farewell to the awe-inspiring Choquequirao Inca site. We’ll promptly commence our descent towards Santa Rosa town, where lush vegetation thrives and the temperature begins to rise, making our way until we reach Playa Rosalina. From there, our ascent continues to the Chiquiska area, where we’ll enjoy our midday meal and settle in for the night.

An early 5:00 am wake-up call accompanied by a serving of invigorating coca tea delivered right to your tent sets the tone for the day. Following this, we efficiently pack our belongings and relish a scrumptious breakfast. Without delay, we embark on a challenging hike, ascending for approximately 4 hours to reach the pinnacle of the Choquequirao trail at Mirador Capuliyoq. Here, our private transport awaits, ready to transport us back to Cusco, with an estimated arrival time of between 5:00 to 6:00 pm.

Highlight of Peru Trip Our time on the Inca Jungle Trek was amazing. This is the best alternative to the traditional Inca Trail treks as it includes fun activities (and cheaper as well). Mountain biking, river rafting, and zip lining are great additions on the journey to Machu Picchu. Also stopping along the trek to meet various local village farmers was really neat! Our guide Paul was helpful and informative. We had a big group of individuals who all booked through different agencies so it was sometimes difficult to provide all the answers. There may have been some confusion at times but it all worked out in the end. It should be noted that the accommodations are very basic for the first 2 nights so don’t expect anything fancy. As long as you go into this trek with the right attitude then it will be a blast. This was the highlight of my Peru trip!
