General Information

Choquequirao Trek

Our Choquequirao trek 4 Days offers an invigorating and remarkable journey, providing a gratifying adventure. Come and accompany us on an exploration of Machu Picchu’s sacred counterpart. This expedition allows you to witness firsthand an exceptional Inca settlement nestled atop the Apurimac Canyon, referred to by the local Quechua people as “the Talking God” due to its powerful river. The trek initiates and concludes in the town of Cachora. It is indeed a demanding excursion, not suitable for the faint-hearted. This hike spans a total of 20 miles in one direction or 40 miles round trip.

  1. Key Attractions: Hike to Machu Picchu’s “sister city”, Choquequirao, which means the Cradle of Gold.
  2. Pinnacle Experiences: Enjoy a serious physical challenge – steep uphills and downhills through the amazing Apurimac Canyon.
  3. Scenic Wonders: Enjoy the dramatic landscapes and a variety of flora and fauna.
  4. Memorable Moments: You will see Condor flying over you in the afternoon at Choquequirao.
  5. Noteworthy Features: Choquequirao is far less crowded and offers a more authentic trekking experience than the classic Inca Trail.
  6. Cultural Encounters: Hike through small villages on the way and see how Peruvian people live in remote areas.
  7. Panoramic Vistas: Soak in views of snow-capped mountains and awe-inspiring Incan ruins.

Choquequirao Trek Itinerary

We’ll arrange to pick you up from your hotel at approximately 5:00 am. From there, we embark on a nearly 4-hour drive to Cachora. While on the bus journey, you’ll have the opportunity to admire the snow-covered peaks of Salkantay and Veronica, which were revered as the Sacred Deities by the Incas. Our next stop is Capulliyuc, a 4.5-hour drive from the starting point. Here, we rendezvous with our horsemen, and our skilled cook prepares a delightful meal to kickstart our two-hour hike to Chikiska.

Subsequently, we begin our descent along the eastern slopes of the Andes, eventually reaching Coca Masana at an elevation of 2,330 meters. As we continue, the temperature rises, and the surrounding flora and fauna undergo a noticeable transformation. We finally arrive at Playa Rosalina (Rosalina Beach) and proceed to hike up to Santa Rosa. Here, our team will arrange the setup of our tents for an overnight stay.

Today is likely the most challenging day of the expedition. Following a satisfying breakfast, we gather our possessions and embark on a hike, ascending towards Maranpata. We will trek for approximately an additional 2 hours to reach Choquequirao, where our talented chef awaits us with a mouthwatering lunch. After savoring our meal, we set out to explore the archaeological wonder that is Choquequirao, offering us a glimpse into the splendid era of the Inca civilization.

Subsequently, we return to Raqaypata, where a hearty dinner awaits us, followed by a well-deserved night’s rest.

Awakening amidst the Andes’ majestic beauty is one of the joys of these trekking days! It’s truly an awe-inspiring experience. Breakfast will be served promptly at around 6:00 AM. Following breakfast, we organize our belongings, and without delay, we commence our trek towards the village of Marampata. Here, the lush vegetation becomes more abundant, and the climate turns warmer. We continue our hike until we reach Playa Rosalina, where we’ll pause for our midday meal. Afterward, we press on, making our way to Chiquisca, where we’ll establish our campsite for the night.

An early wake-up call greets you at 5:00 am, accompanied by a warm serving of coca tea delivered right to your tent. Following this, we proceed to pack up our belongings, enjoy our breakfast, and commence our ascent towards the summit of the Choquequirao trail. This demanding climb will take approximately 4 hours, leading us to the Mirador Capuliyoq. Here, we share our final dinner with the entire AB Expeditions family.

Subsequently, our private transport awaits us, ready to transport us back to Cusco. We anticipate arriving in Cusco around 5:00 or 6:00 pm.

Highlight of Peru Trip Our time on the Inca Jungle Trek was amazing. This is the best alternative to the traditional Inca Trail treks as it includes fun activities (and cheaper as well). Mountain biking, river rafting, and zip lining are great additions on the journey to Machu Picchu. Also stopping along the trek to meet various local village farmers was really neat! Our guide Paul was helpful and informative. We had a big group of individuals who all booked through different agencies so it was sometimes difficult to provide all the answers. There may have been some confusion at times but it all worked out in the end. It should be noted that the accommodations are very basic for the first 2 nights so don’t expect anything fancy. As long as you go into this trek with the right attitude then it will be a blast. This was the highlight of my Peru trip!
