Your exciting journey begins in Puerto Maldonado, the biodiversity capital of Peru. From there, embark on a scenic 50-minute boat ride along the winding Madre de Dios River to reach the Amazon Field Station by Inkaterra, located within Peru’s very first ecological reserve.

Jungle Trails

Begin your rainforest adventure by walking along trails that snake through the massive roots of towering trees. This is the perfect introduction to the Amazon’s ecosystems. Within the Inkaterra Ecological Reserve, over 540 bird species, 362 ant species (a world record!), and more than 100 mammals have been recorded.

Night River Excursion

Sail down the Madre de Dios River after dark to look for nocturnal wildlife along the shores. Keep your eyes open for owls, capybaras, caimans, and other night-dwelling creatures as your guide explains their curious behaviors and adaptations.

Inkaterra Canopy Walkway

Climb high above the forest floor to explore the rainforest canopy from a system of seven hanging bridges and eight observation platforms, 42 meters (138 feet) up in the trees. Originally designed for scientific research, this experience offers breathtaking views and a rare perspective of the jungle.

River Island Exploration

Take a 20-minute boat ride to a remote river island near the Inkaterra Amazon Field Station. Explore a unique transitional forest filled with colorful birds, including the highly sought-after Amazonian umbrellabird (Cephalopterus ornatus).

Lake Sandoval (Alternative to River Island – Extra Cost)

Walk along a forest boardwalk into Tambopata National Reserve to reach Lake Sandoval, a mirror-like lake surrounded by palm trees. Glide through mangroves in a canoe and watch for black caimans, turtles, anacondas, howler monkeys, and the elusive giant river otters.

Organic Bio-Garden

Visit our organic bio-garden to discover a variety of Amazonian plants and learn about their traditional medicinal uses. The garden is managed by Inkaterra Asociación (ITA), our non-profit organization dedicated to preserving ancestral knowledge and promoting sustainable agriculture.

Palmetum

Explore our 30-hectare Palmetum, home to 19 species of native Amazonian palms. This area is part of a reforestation and conservation initiative. Discover the survival strategies of these plants and learn about their ecological and cultural significance—including the famous “walking palm” that shifts its roots to seek sunlight.

Night Walk in the Jungle

Return to Puerto Maldonado by motorized boat in time for your flight.

Packing List

  • Sunscreen and Lip Balm: The sun at altitude can be powerful; guard your skin and lips.
  • Toilet Paper: Handy for local bathrooms (yes, most charge one sol for use)
  • Insect Repellent: Beginning on your second day, you’ll be in the jungle, an area where mosquitoes are prevalent. It is advisable also to wear long-sleeved clothing.
  • Outerwear: A warm jacket for the cool mornings, and a lighter one for the  Layering is important when it comes to adjusting to fluctuating temperatures.
  • Energy Snacks: Beef or fish jerky, energy bars (you can try something like Kind bars), chocolate, granola, and candy to keep you energized the 6-8 hours worth of trekking you will do each day.
  • Water Container:You need a bottle or hydration system with at least a 2-liter capacity. The first lunch will also see it being refilled with purified water.
  • Flashlight or Headlamp: Helpful for getting around the campsite and starting hikes early in the morning.
  • Hats and Sunglasses: A hat for sun and a warm hat for evening On chilly mornings, it’s gloves that are also a good 
  • Cash onHand: Carry 600 soles (200 USD) in small, easily exchanged bills for bathrooms, snacks, souvenirs, and tips.

How physically demanding is the tour?

Moderate. Activities include walking through rainforest trails, climbing canopy towers, and canoeing. While not extreme, a basic level of fitness is recommended.

Will I see animals like monkeys, caimans, or otters?

Wildlife sightings can never be guaranteed, but the Tambopata Reserve is one of the most biodiverse regions in the world. With the help of expert guides, chances of seeing monkeys, birds, caimans, and even giant river otters are high.

Is travel insurance required?

It is not mandatory, but highly recommended. The rainforest is a remote environment, and having travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, delays, and cancellations is advisable.
