(Explore the Sacred Valley, take a city tour of Cusco and visit Machu Picchu), this itinerary spans three days and allows you to enjoy Cusco’s most outstanding destinations, along with breathtaking views and the region’s delicious cuisine.
You will leave Cusco early in the morning (around 4:30 am) for a trip to the village of Ollantaytambo which is located in the Sacred Valley. This is where you will catch the train to Aguas Calientes. The train journey itself is filled with stunning views and will take just under 2 hours. You will then bus up to Machu Picchu where you will be given a guided tour of the site and learn about the Inca civilization, visiting all of the highlights of the ruins (2 hours).
After your guided tour, you and your guide will part ways and if you have booked an additional hike such as Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu mountain, you will have time for the hike as well as get to explore the site on your own. There are several places to explore that are not part of the tour such as the Inca bridge and the sun gate.
In the afternoon you will get back on the bus and head to Aguas Calientes town. You will then board the train back to Ollantaytambo, where a private van will be waiting for you to drive back to Cusco.
Yes, a permit is required to visit Machu Picchu. In order to enter the Machu Picchu archaeological site, you will need to obtain a ticket or permit in advance. This applies to both the main Machu Picchu site and any additional attractions or hikes within the site, such as Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain. The cost of climbing Machu Picchu can vary depending on a number of factors such as the time of year, the type of tour, the length of the tour, and your starting location. However, I assume that by “climbing” you actually mean visiting Machu Picchu, so here are some estimates for visiting Machu Picchu:
The cost for a one-day entrance ticket to Machu Picchu is around $70 USD for foreign visitors. However, if you want to hike one of the trails to Machu Picchu, such as the Inca Trail, the cost will be higher and will depend on the length of the trail, the type of tour you choose, and the season. A typical 4-day Inca Trail tour can cost anywhere from $500 to $1500 USD per person.
In addition to entrance fees and tour costs, you will also need to factor in the cost of transportation, food, and accommodation. It is recommended to book your Machu Picchu tour with a reputable tour company in order to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
June is generally considered a good time to visit Machu Picchu. This is because it falls within the dry season in Peru, which runs from May to October. During this time, you can expect sunny weather and lower chances of rain, making it an ideal time to explore the ancient ruins and hike the surrounding mountains. Additionally, June falls within the peak tourist season in Peru, so you can expect crowds at Machu Picchu and other popular destinations. However, with careful planning and by booking tickets and accommodations in advance, you can still have a memorable and enjoyable trip to Machu Picchu in June.
Yes, you can hike Machu Picchu in December. However, it’s important to keep in mind that December falls within the rainy season in Peru, which runs from November to April. This means that you can expect more frequent rain, and trails may be muddy and slippery. Additionally, December is considered a shoulder season for tourism, so there may be fewer crowds than during the peak season (May to October), but it’s still a popular time to visit.
If you are planning to hike the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu in December, keep in mind that permits are limited and often sell out months in advance, so it’s important to plan and book your trip well in advance. Alternatively, there are other trekking routes to Machu Picchu, such as the Salkantay Trek or the Lares Trek, which may be less crowded and don’t require a permit.
Overall, while hiking Machu Picchu in December can be challenging due to the weather, it can also be a unique and rewarding experience with the right preparation and gear.
The elevation of Machu Picchu is approximately 2,430 meters (7,970 feet) above sea level. It is located in the Andes Mountains of Peru, and the surrounding peaks can reach heights of over 6,000 meters (19,685 feet). Because of its high elevation, visitors to Machu Picchu may experience altitude sickness, which can cause symptoms such as headache, dizziness, and shortness of breath. It’s important to acclimate to the altitude before visiting and to take precautions such as drinking plenty of water and avoiding alcohol and strenuous activity during the first few days at high elevation.
The best time to visit Machu Picchu is during the dry season, which runs from May to September. During this time, the weather is generally sunny and dry, with lower chances of rain and clearer skies, making for better visibility of the surrounding mountains and ruins.
Machu Picchu is not a mountain, but rather a 15th-century Inca citadel located on a mountain ridge in the Andes Mountains of Peru. The mountain where Machu Picchu is located is called “Machu Picchu Mountain,” which is part of the larger mountain range known as the Vilcabamba mountain range. The Machu Picchu citadel was built at an elevation of approximately 2,430 meters (7,970 feet) above sea level, and it offers stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. While Machu Picchu is not a mountain itself, its location on the mountain ridge and the surrounding mountains make it a unique and breathtaking destination for visitors.
