Inca Trail in February
Hello traveler! This is Jhoel, your adventure guide.
In this guide, I’ll explain what happens with the Inca Trail in February, why it closes, whether Machu Picchu remains open, and what to expect if you’re planning your trip during this month in 2026.
Is Inca Trail closed in February?
Yes. The Inca Trail is completely closed throughout the month of February, and this applies every year, including February 2026. This closure affects both the Classic Inca Trail (4 days) and the Short Inca Trail (2 days).
During February, Peruvian authorities and park maintenance teams carry out essential conservation work along the trail. This includes repairing stone paths, reinforcing bridges, clearing drainage systems, and restoring sections damaged by heavy rains. February is also the wettest month of the year in the Cusco region, which increases the risk of landslides and unsafe trail conditions.
For safety and preservation reasons, hiking the Inca Trail is not permitted at any time in February, even with a guide or tour operator.
Does Machu Picchu close in February?
No. Machu Picchu remains open in February, even while the Inca Trail is closed.
The archaeological site operates year-round and continues to receive visitors during the rainy season. In fact, February is one of the quietest months at Machu Picchu, with significantly fewer tourists compared to the dry-season months.
Most travelers reach Machu Picchu by train from Cusco or the Sacred Valley. Weather during February is typically warm and humid, with frequent rain showers, especially in the afternoons. Mornings are often clearer, offering good visiting conditions if you plan early entry times.
While the citadel stays open, occasional temporary restrictions on certain circuits or viewpoints may occur due to weather-related safety concerns.
