Humantay Lake is a stunning natural wonder located in the Peruvian Andes, just a few hours from Cuzco. If you are planning a trip to Peru, visiting Humantay Lake is an experience not to be missed. Here is how to get there from Cuzco.

Option 1: On your own

One of the most popular ways to get to the Humantay Lagoon is to do it on your own. The hike to Laguna Humantay starts from Soraypampa, a small town located about 160 kilometers (100 miles) from Cusco. Here are the steps to follow:

  • Take the bus from Cusco to Mollepata, a small town located about 3 hours away, here you can have breakfast in a restaurant and buy snacks and water for the hike.
  • Then you will continue until you reach Soraypampa where you will start the hike to the Humantay Lagoon. The hike is about 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) long and takes about 1 – 2 hours, depending on your level of fitness.
  • Enjoy the breathtaking views of the Humantay Lagoon, take pictures and rest before returning to Soraypampa where the bus will be waiting to take you back to Cusco.

Option 2: Book a guided tour

If you don’t want to get hectic organizing your trip, you can book a guided tour that includes transportation, guide and meals. This tour departs early in the morning from Cusco and takes between 3 and 4 hours to reach Soraypampa. Once there, your guide will take you on a hike to Humantay Lake, where you will have plenty of time to explore and take photos. Afterwards, you will return to Cusco with your guide.

Whichever option you choose, be sure to dress appropriately for the hike and bring plenty of water and snacks. It is also recommended that you spend a few days in Cusco before attempting the hike to Humantay Lake to acclimatize to the altitude.
