Inca Jungle Trek 3 Days Itinerary

The Inca Jungle adventure begins with a hotel pickup at 6:00 am. Our comfortable minibus will take us on a three-hour journey through the breathtaking Sacred Valley of the Incas until we reach Abra Malaga. During the drive, you can catch your first glimpse of the Cordillera of Urubamba through the windows of the bus.

After crossing the Vilcanota River and stopping in the town of Urubamaba and Ollantaytambo to stretch our legs, we will arrive at Abra Malaga pass, the highest point of the trip at 4,316m. At the top, we will gear up and receive a 20-minute briefing from our experienced guide. Our reliable mountain bikes, protective gear, waterproof jackets and pants will be provided, including full-coverage helmets and potentially body gear.

We’ll then begin our thrilling 3-hour downhill biking journey through the Andes, experiencing the stunning beauty of snow-capped mountains and the tropical forest where the Peruvian Amazon begins. Throughout the ride, we’ll pass by small streams and enjoy the changing climate from cold to tropical. In case of fatigue or a wish to stop, a vehicle will be available behind the group.

The route from the top of Malaga Pass to our final destination in Huamanmarka is all downhill with a 4,316m to 2,130m descent, covering a distance of less than 55km. We’ll continue by private car for about 30 minutes until reaching our Eco Terra Lodge Santa Maria, where we’ll have a delicious lunch.

In the afternoon, you’ll have the option to go river rafting on the Vilcanota River, which flows through part of the jungle. The thrilling level III and IV rafting experience is available from April to December, and all safety equipment will be provided. After the adventure, we’ll return to Santa Maria for a delicious dinner and restful sleep in our lodge to recharge our energy for the next day.

On the Second day, thrill-seekers can partake in zip-lining, which involves riding along four different cables and a suspension bridge for about two hours. We’ll kick off the day with breakfast and then join a reputable operator for this activity. Afterward, we’ll head to the government-controlled hydroelectric station to enter the Machu Picchu National Park, also known as the Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary, where we’ll savor a fantastic lunch. Then, we’ll trek for three hours alongside the train track to reach Aguas Calientes town by 5 pm, concluding the Inca Jungle Trek. However, the highlight of the trip awaits us – Machu Picchu, the imposing mountain that looms over Aguas Calientes. The most awaited day by all… MACHU PICCHU. You will wake up around 4:00 am to prepare for the hike to the main entrance of Machu Picchu. Each person will be provided with a packed breakfast, and we will begin the half-hour hike to Puente “Ruinas”, After passing the first checkpoint, we will climb the stairs for about an hour to arrive at the main gate of Machu Picchu at 6:00 am. Once inside Machu Picchu, your guide will lead you directly to the ideal place to witness the sunrise and capture photographs. Then, your local guide will give you a tour of the main sectors of the citadel, which will last approximately 2 hours. Throughout this guided tour, you will learn about the history and culture of the Inca Empire.

At the end of the guided tour, you will have free time to relax and explore on your own. This is, of course, unless you have arranged an excursion to Huayna Picchu (which must be booked in advance, as it fills up quickly and costs $20 per person); your guide will tell you where to start this excursion. The hike takes no more than 2 hours round trip.

Taking the train is a scenic way to return to Cusco and offers more time to explore Machu Picchu. If you plan to hike Huaynapicchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, we highly recommend taking the train since these hikes can take at least 3 hours to complete. You need to be at the train station in Aguas Calientes by 4:22 PM to catch the train back to Cusco, arriving at around 8:30 PM. Alternatively, you can take a later train at 6:20 PM, which takes 1 hour and 45 minutes to reach Ollantaytambo, where you will switch to a car for the final 2-hour journey to Cusco. With this option, you will arrive in Cusco around 10:30 PM.

Returning to Cusco by car is a more economical option for those on a tight budget. However, keep in mind that this option provides less time to explore Machu Picchu. If you plan to hike Huaynapicchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, you may be short on time. To take this option, you need to leave Machu Picchu by midday and walk for 3 hours to Hidroelectrica, where you will meet the car at 3:00 PM. If you plan to hike Huaynapicchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, it’s recommended to stay one more night in Aguas Calientes and return to Cusco by car on the 5th day to fully enjoy the experience.

Highlight of Peru Trip Our time on the Inca Jungle Trek was amazing. This is the best alternative to the traditional Inca Trail treks as it includes fun activities (and cheaper as well). Mountain biking, river rafting, and zip lining are great additions on the journey to Machu Picchu. Also stopping along the trek to meet various local village farmers was really neat! Our guide Paul was helpful and informative. We had a big group of individuals who all booked through different agencies so it was sometimes difficult to provide all the answers. There may have been some confusion at times but it all worked out in the end. It should be noted that the accommodations are very basic for the first 2 nights so don’t expect anything fancy. As long as you go into this trek with the right attitude then it will be a blast. This was the highlight of my Peru trip!
